The starter motor is activated when the ignition switch is turned to the "Start" position. The starter motor engages the flywheel and turns the engine for a short period of time, until the ignition system fires, and the engine runs independently. The starter motor may become weak when it ages. It may also begin to drag when you are trying to engage the engine. If the starter motor fails, it must be replaced, for the vehicle to operate. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Adjustable wrench Socket wrench Jack Jack stands Step by Step : 1 Disconnect the negative battery cable with an adjustable wrench. 2 Raise the vehicle, using a jack, and secure it with jack stands. 3 Disconnect the cable from the starter motor with a socket wrench. Audi . How to Change the Starter on the 2000 S-10Changing a dying or failed starter in your 2000 Chevrolet S-10 pickup is a repair job the average owner can do. Although there is not much in the way, you will need to remove one or more components to gain access to the unit, depending on your particular engine model. Nonetheless, armed with a few common tools, you can take care of the problem and change the starter right in your driveway in a couple of hours or less. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Wrench set Lug wrench Floor jack 2 safety stands Safety glasses Ratchet Ratchet extension Socket set Breaker bar, if necessary Torque wrenchRemoving the Old Starter Step by Step : 1 Park your S-10 on level ground, lift the hood and disconnect the ground (black) battery cable with a wrench. 2 Loosen the front, passenger's-side wheel lug nuts with a lug wrench, if you have the two-wheel drive, 4.3L engine model S-10. 3 Raise and support the front of your pickup with a floor jack and set a safety stand on each side under the frame for support. 4 Remove the front, passenger's-side wheel, if you have the two-wheel drive, 4.3L engine model S-10. This will give better access to the starter motor. 5 Put your safety glasses on, crawl under the engine and remove the dust shield from under the engine with a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket, if your S-10 comes equipped with them. 6 Disconnect the front exhaust pipe with a breaker bar and socket and move it aside. This pipe connects to the exhaust manifold. Remove the tubular brace that connects to the engine on one side and to the clutch housing on the other, under the starter motor. Use a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket. This step applies to the 2.2L engine model. 7 Disconnect the wire and cable from the back of the solenoid with a wrench, if you have the 2.2L or 4.3L two-wheel driver S-10 model. The solenoid is the small cylinder mounted on top of the starter. 8 Remove the two nuts and bolt holding the bracket to the end of the starter, if you have the 2.2L engine model. Use a ratchet and socket. 9 Loosen the two starter mounting bolts with a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket. Hold the starter firmly with one hand and finish removing the bolts. As you remove the starter from the vehicle, pay attention to any shims positioned between the starter and the engine, so that you replace them in their original location and direction. Step by Step : 10 Rotate the starter motor after removing the mounting bolts, if you have the 4.3L, four-wheel drive S-10 model. Disconnect the wire and cable from the back of the solenoid with a wrench and remove the starter from the vehicle. Installing the New Starter Step by Step : 1 Position the starter near its mounting position with the rear of the starter facing you, if you have the 4.3L, four-wheel drive S-10 model. Connect the wire and cable to the back of the solenoid with the wrench and then rotate the starter with the wire connections facing away from you. 2 Hold the starter firmly in its mounting position along with the shims, if equipped, and install the two mounting bolts finger tight. Tighten the bolts to 32 foot-pounds (43 Nm) on the 2.2L model and 37 foot-pounds (50 Nm) on the 4.3L two- and four-wheel drive models. Use a torque wrench, ratchet extension and socket. 3 Replace the bracket on the end of the starter motor with the ratchet and socket, if you have the 2.2L engine model. 4 Connect the wire and cable to the rear of the solenoid with the wrench, if you have the 2.2L or 4.3L two-wheel drive S-10 model. 5 Replace the tubular brace with the ratchet, ratchet extension and socket and the front exhaust pipe with the breaker bar and socket, if you have the 2.2L engine model. 6 Reinstall the dust shield with the ratchet, ratchet extension and socket, if your S10 comes equipped with it. 7 Reinstall the front, passenger's-side wheel, if you have the two-wheel drive, 4.3L engine model S-10 and tighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench just enough to hold the wheel flat against the wheel hub. 8 Lower your pickup off the safety stands with the floor jack. 9 Finish tightening the lug nuts on the front, passenger's-side wheel, if you have the two-wheel drive, 4.3L model S-10. Step by Step : 10 Reconnect the ground (black) battery cable with the wrench and close the hood. Referrals: I've always felt that the best way to find a good mechanic is the same way you find a doctor, lawyer, or plumber — through referrals. Ask people who drive the same make vehicle as you do where they go for repairs, and then check out the shops that are the most conveniently located. As a fringe benefit, you'll also know which shops to avoid, because many of the people you ask will have horror stories to tell you, too. Evaluating a Facility Audi . You should also ask what the hourly labor rate is and whether the shop uses OEM parts for your particular vehicle. A telephone interview can give you a good idea of whether a shop's prices are competitive and provide you with a feeling for the shop's "vibes." If the people you talk to are surly and uncommunicative over the phone, chances are that you're going to run into trouble if you have to deal with them in an emergency. Before you need service, follow up a positive phone interview with an unannounced visit to check on the following things: e* Is the place clean and well-organized or filthy and cluttered? Appearance is a good indication of general attitude. Auto repair is a trade that calls for patience and precision. If the shop is sloppy and disorganized, the work may be, too. *«* Does the shop have modern electronic diagnostic and testing equipment? These machines save time by pinpointing trouble areas and checking adjustments and tolerances. Saving time means saving money when it comes to paying those labor charges. Of course, this equipment is only as good as the person using it. Ask if shop technicians attend factory schools and seminars run by manufacturers to learn how to use the more sophisticated analyzers and keep up-to-date on new systems. Modern vehicles require sophisticated, specialized, diagnostic computer equipment, sometimes specific to the make and model of vehicle. Find out whether your vehicle is in that category. If it is, you may have to take it to your local dealer for any work involving computer-controlled functions. Part IV: Dealing with On-the-Road Emergencies Does the shop have a good, up-to-date service manual for your vehicle? I usually buy one for my car's year, make, and model and offer to lend it to the mechanic. After all, service facilities can't stock manuals for every vehicle in the world. Before you hand over your manual, scan the section that deals with the system in question. If you know which parts are involved and have at least a general idea of the work required, you'll be able to communicate intelligently with the service writer and have a basis for questioning any parts or labor charges that seem excessive. " Does the shop have the necessary tools to do your job? Ask whether any part of the job will have to be sent out to a specialist. If this is the case, ask whether they will simply pass those charges on to you, or mark them up to compensate themselves for the time and effort of delivering the vehicle to the specialist and picking it up afterward. If the entire job has to be done by an outside specialist, consider taking the vehicle there directly instead of having your shop serve as a middleman. Avoid conflicts with the service facility by saying that you want another estimate. Audi . Where in the trunk is the fuel cut off switch on a Lexus LS400?
