Remove the tubular brace that connects to the engine on one side and to the clutch housing on the other, under the starter motor. Use a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket. Disconnect the wire and cable from the back of the solenoid with a wrench, if you have the 2.2L or 4.3L two-wheel driver S-10 model. The solenoid is the small cylinder mounted on top of the starter.

Remove the two nuts and bolt holding the bracket to the end of the starter, if you have the 2.2L engine model. Use a ratchet and socket.

Loosen the two starter mounting bolts with a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket. Hold the starter firmly with one hand and finish removing the bolts. As you remove the starter from the vehicle, pay attention to any shims positioned between the starter and the engine, so that you replace them in their original location and direction.

Replace the bracket on the end of the starter motor with the ratchet and socket, if you have the 2.2L engine model.

Connect the wire and cable to the rear of the solenoid with the wrench, if you have the 2.2L or 4.3L two-wheel drive S-10 model.

Reinstall the dust shield with the ratchet, ratchet extension and socket, if your S10 comes equipped with it.
